Film Extra Jobs in the UK: How to Get Them — TDA London
Every crowd scene you have ever watched was cast by somebody. Film extra work — properly called supporting artist work — is one of the few ways into a professional film set with no training and no credits, and it is badly explained almost everywhere.
You populate the world. You are the commuter, the wedding guest, the nurse crossing behind the lead. The job is to be completely believable and completely unnoticeable, and to do it identically on take eleven as you did on take one.
Continuity is most of the skill. If you walked left to right carrying a coffee in the wide shot, you do that again, at the same pace, in the close-up shot four hours later.
Productions rarely cast extras individually. They brief an agency with a look, a headcount and a date, and the agency fills it from people whose availability, sizes and reliability are already known.
This is why availability beats talent for this category. A supporting artist who answers the phone and can be on a Bristol set at 6am tomorrow will out-earn a better performer who is hard to reach.
A basic day rate, plus supplements — overtime, night shoots, costume fittings, wet work, use of your own vehicle or wardrobe. If you are given a line you move category entirely and the fee changes, which is why you never improvise dialogue on set.
Agency commission comes out of the fee, disclosed before you take the booking. Nobody legitimate charges you to join.
Early call, long waits, a holding area away from the set, and short bursts of activity. Bring a book and a phone charger. Do not photograph the set, do not approach the cast, and do not leave the holding area without telling the assistant director.
The people who get rebooked are the ones who are quiet, punctual and unbothered by the waiting.
On a large production you are one of two hundred. On an independent feature the unit is small, the schedule is compressed, and background performers are often used far more deliberately.
Our sister production company London New Wave casts from our boards, and its features are a useful illustration of the range: The Model, which won Best British Asian Film at the UK Asian Film Festival 2026, Before Nikkah, and They're Gone with Nick Moran and Samantha Giles. Independent sets will not pay like a commercial, but you will be closer to the camera and you will learn more in a day.
It is also where usable footage comes from. How a British independent film is cast explains what a producer is looking at.
In the UK an agency may not charge you a fee simply to be represented. Upfront registration costs, compulsory paid photography with an in-house photographer, and guarantees of work are the three clearest warnings. Our guide to spotting a modelling scam applies to extra work without modification.
For some people it stays a flexible sideline, which is a perfectly good outcome. For others it is the first professional set they stand on, and it makes the next thing less frightening.
If you want to move towards speaking roles, that is a different board and a different submission — our acting arm Allied Artists covers how agency submissions are actually read. And if commercial work suits you better, apply to the board.
